It’s That Time of Year Again


The most wonderful time of the year is almost upon us once more

Along with classic red Starbucks’ cups, Coca-Cola’s infamous Christmas truck and supermarket shelves lined with advent calendars, Christmas adverts are a sure sign that Santa is on his way!

With only 45 shopping days until Christmas, the nation is eagerly awaiting the release of the infamous John Lewis Christmas ad. Last year’s launch of Buster the Boxer featuring a spin on the classic ‘one day I’ll fly away’, generated over 25 million views alone.

John Lewis spends about £6m on its annual campaign and has recently tied with Sainsbury’s 2014 Christmas Eve story, to be the most-watched Christmas TV advert.

Statistics show that businesses in the UK spent an estimated £5.6 billion on advertising last year and records are set to rise even further this year.

The power of Social Media…

There has been a debate doing the rounds on Twitter this week, as to whether John Lewis’s much-anticipated advert had been leaked prematurely. The advert which featured an acoustic version of Aha’s ‘Take on me’, followed the story of an unlikely friendship between a fox and a mouse and their adventure through the Winter season. However soon after John Lewis was quick to set the records straight and released a four-second video with the hashtag #UnderTheBed, which created a huge buzz on Twitter as an indication of a possible Christmas Ad release.


As we wait for much anticipated John Lewis advert, here is a breakdown of all the Christmas Adverts of 2017… so far!

Vodaphone – Release Date: 1st November 2017

This year, Vodaphone were the first brand to kick off the festive season with the first Christmas advert with a noticeable Love Actually-esque feel to it.

Barbour – Released Date: 2nd November 2017

#BarbourChristmas, the story of The Snowman and The Snowdog continues with the next chapter in their story. When the snow starts to fall on Christmas Eve, magic can happen…

Argos – Released Date: 3rd November 2017

Argos was one of the first to launch their advert at the beginning of the month which features pointy-eared elves, this year’s must-have children’s toys and futuristic rocket-powered sleighs.

Tesco – Released Date: 3rd November 2017

Tesco has launched its 2017 Christmas campaign with the first of five television adverts which celebrate the different ways millions of UK shoppers enjoy Christmas, and how great food sits at the heart of it all.

ASDA – Release Date: 4th November 2017

After their successful Halloween campaign, Asda was next to release their festive-feel Christmas ad, which offers an insight into their “Imaginarium” Christmas workshop. As we follow a young girl and her grandfather around the factory, viewers are meant to be discovering the secrets behind Asda’s festive range.

Very – Release Date: 6th November

Online department store Very.co.uk today launched its 90-second animated edit which shows Anna, aided by her cuddly wolf toy, attempt to give a pink cubed present to everyone on her Christmas gift list, including the person who deserves it the most (as he never receives presents of his own) Santa.

Marks & Spencer – Release Date: 7th November

Marks & Spencer has followed in John Lewis’s footsteps with a Paddington Bear-fronted Christmas campaign that embraces instore events, cuddly toys and a charity tie-in.

Aldi – Release Date: 7th November

Kevin the carrot was the star of the supermarket’s 2016 festive advert when he found himself precariously dangling from Rudolph’s antler. Luckily, Kevin survived the ordeal and he’s back for the 2017 episode and this time he has a love interest.
